Michael Burdon

Barrister

Public Law Children

In Care Proceedings, Michael is regularly instructed on behalf of Parents, Children and Local Authorities up to Court of Appeal level as both single and leading Junior in complex cases of substantial length. He is particularly regarded for his experience in fact finding hearings involving disputed medical evidence. Michael has a particular interest in cases with an international law element and frequently advises and represents parties in Hague Convention 1996 applications.

Private Law Children

It is important to give realistic and pragmatic advice at the earliest opportunity and Michael is able to bring 30 years of experience in family law in providing this advice in a sympathetic manner. He is able to achieve fair settlements through creative and imaginative thinking, but is a tenacious advocate when a settlement cannot be reached. As an approved direct access family barrister he also accepts instructions from the public.

International Children Law

Michael leads the International Family Law team. He is regularly instructed in Hague Convention cases for both the ‘left behind’ parent and the abductor. This is an area which requires a detailed knowledge of the applicable law and an ability to impart clear advice speedily and decisively. Michael is happy to provide ’emergency’ advice to Solicitors if required.

Matrimonial Finance

Michael is a senior member of the Chambers Financial Remedy team. He is regularly instructed in high net worth cases by Leading Solicitors.

Cohabitation, Civil Partnerships and Agreements

As well as Financial Remedy work, Michael also has considerable experience in property disputes arising out of the relationships of cohabiting couples and claims for provision for children under Schedule 1 of the Children Act 1989.
