Pippa Pudney

Pippa is a specialist child protection and Court of Protection barrister with a practice focussed on the deprivation of liberty of children and young people.

 

Pippa has an established child-protection practice, representing local authorities, parents, children and NHS bodies in complex cases. Pippa is regularly instructed in cases which involve the deprivation of liberty of a child and has extensive knowledge in this field including the tricky issues of restraint, consent and state responsibility. Pippa is the co-author of a book recently published by Bloomsbury entitled ‘The Deprivation of Liberty of Children and Young People’ which summarises the law in relation to deprivations of liberty including how they are authorised and how they intertwine with the child protection and Care Act 2014 frameworks.

 

Pippa also has a developed Court of Protection practice, dealing regularly with health and welfare isues including complicated capacity disputes, medical treatment cases and injunction proceedings. She is a specialist in cases which involve the transition from inherent jurisdiction proceedings to the Court of Protection, concerning young people. Pippa also has a keen interest in cases which include disputed responsibilities between NHS bodies and local authorities. Pippa edits the Mental Capacity Act 2005 chapter of the Butterworths Family Law Service alongside Chloe Lee.

 

Pippa is ranked as a ‘Rising Star’ by the Legal 500 for Court of Protection: Health and Welfare.

Pippa provides advice and seminars to local solicitors and social workers on law and practice, with a focus on the deprivation of liberty of children and young people.

 

Pippa is a member of the North Eastern Circuit’s Diversity Outreach programme and works alongside members of Chambers to promote diversity at the Bar. Pippa was the Circuit Junior on the North Eastern Circuit for 2023-4. She is the Chair of Chambers’ Equality, Diversity and Social Mobility Committee.
